11.2.2010 – Tuesday Ten on Election Day 2010

I voted today; did you?

True story:  When I went to the polls today, at about 4:15 PM, I signed in and the poll workers went through their routine.  “Voter [Loungekitten] ready to vote.”  “[Loungekitten] voter number 396,” was the reply.  Voter 396?  There are almost 27,000 people living in my township!  Not all eligible to vote, of course.  I refuse to listen to the complaints of those who’ve disenfranchised themselves.  You’re on notice!

Seriously, I know the Presidential election years always draw a lot of voters.  My argument has always been this:  the “off-years” when all your local officials are being elected are way more important than the big national elections.  These are people who attend to the minutiae of your life!  Things like how often you need to cut your lawn.  Whether your schools are allowed to teach the theories of evolution or creationism, and how they are taught.  Stuff like that.  Your local officials have more to do with your daily life than the President does!

Thankfully, the election cycle is over.  The commercials, and the calls have been exhausting.  I am not going to be happy with the results, I know.  At first I thought that we Pennsylvanians would need to seal off the border with Delaware if Christine O’Donnell won, but it looks like the citizens of Delaware should seal their border with us!  I hate how this economy has been used as an excuse for everyone to vote Republicans in office.  We are in a period of structural unemployment:  the skill set of people in this country does not match the available jobs, and they won’t for a long while.  I know the likely governor-elect of PA has said that the reason Pennsylvanians aren’t working because they are lazy and don’t want to work.  And our Senate race is too close to call, but the Republican candidate’s political ideology is self-described as being aligned with Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum.  Uggghh!  Although I generally don’t like how the Republicans have ground Washington D.C. to a halt over the past two years, with their filibustering and using obscure procedural rules to block votes for Democrat sponsored legislation, I hope Democrats get some courage over the next session and at least not play into the Republicans’ tactics, if not start using some tactics of their own.

{Steps down from soap box}
